Comic Book Business Model - Success Bloating Collapse

03/14/2010 08:02 PM
pIt would seem the comic book business model is as follows - Success, Bloating, Collapse. First an endeavor is successful, then the concept is copied and copied until it becomes bloated, then it collapses on itself when fan support dwindles and series begin to be cancelled./p pimg src=http://z.about.com/d/comicbooks/1/0/9/s/IAmAnAvenger_AvengersAcademy_04.jpg border=0 alt= width=110 height=170 align=right / We've seen this with all the crossover events of the 90's, the horror eruption of the 2000's, and with series like The X-Men. Unfortunatley, or fortunately as one may look at it, this model is also cyclical in nature. It keeps coming back. The crossover events made a big splash latley, the horror series evolved into biographies, and the The Avengers are the new X-men. Don't get me wrong, I love The Avengers, but it is funny how The Avengers are going on the same path as Marvel's Merry Mutants./p pThe most recent series to be announced is Avengers Academy, which is very reminiscent of The New Mutants, if I may say so. I really hope they succeed, as I have always been a fan of Avengers (I think I was one of the few to collect Solo Avengers and West Coast Avengers). It's just sort of funny to see this play out time and again. I doubt it will change as this model seems to be present in most businesses, especially where fandom is concerned./p pemImage Copyright Marvel Comics/em/pp style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/15/comic-book-business-model-success-bloating-collapse.htm"Comic Book Business Model - Success Bloating Collapse/a originally appeared on a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/"About.com Comic Books/a on Monday, March 15th, 2010 at 00:02:56./ppa href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/15/comic-book-business-model-success-bloating-collapse.htm"Permalink/a | a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/15/comic-book-business-model-success-bloating-collapse.htm#gB3"Comment/a | a href="http://comicbooks.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/15/comic-book-business-model-success-bloating-collapse.htm#038;zItl=Comic Book Business Model - Success Bloating Collapse"Email this/a/p

Comics Invasion!: Motion Comics

03/14/2010 07:01 PM
pOne of the things to come out of this electric age of easy to access software programs is motion comics. Some people are making their own, using programs like Flash to animate their webcomics. Others have used this technology to create adaptations of comics currently out there, such as the motion comics adaptation of the Watchmen comics. I've seen a couple recently that caught my eye. One was a indie made endeavor and the other is from a group with large pockets behind it./p pimg src=http://z.about.com/d/comicbooks/1/0/8/s/screenshot_Elmo Visit border=0 alt= width=170 height=110 align=left /The first was the intro to an online flash video game - a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://www.bubblebox.com/game/Adventure/1654.htmForeign Creature 2/a. The intro was pretty well done and was completely in a motion comic style. It worked very well for this free endeavor. The other is the latest release from Moving Picture Books with their a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://www.movingpicturebooks.com/digital-downloads.phpSesame Street/a collection. While not a comic per se, it was very much in the style and spirit of current motion comic books./p pOf the two, the first was free (obviously) and the second costs $1.99 per book. Either way its a pretty cool way to see this kind of technology used. I've noticed that the whole motion comic thing really doesn't seem to be blowing up in the comic book world. The ones that do seem to be using it are in other pop culture realms such as the motion picture world to promote their movies or add extras to DVD's. I don't know where you stand on the topic, but I much prefer my comic the old fashioned way. I do like these bits, but they all have this sort of cheesiness to them that reminds me of the really old cartoons and the first motion comics to come out in my opinion. These a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdNjI9Y28pgvideos/a were basically the original art from the comic cut out and had some basic motions added to them. I still just can't get past that feeling. Can you?/p pemImage Copyright Moving Pictures Books/emp style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/14/comics-invasion-motion-comics.htm"Comics Invasion!: Motion Comics/a originally appeared on a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/"About.com Comic Books/a on Sunday, March 14th, 2010 at 23:01:52./ppa href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/14/comics-invasion-motion-comics.htm"Permalink/a | a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/14/comics-invasion-motion-comics.htm#gB3"Comment/a | a href="http://comicbooks.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/14/comics-invasion-motion-comics.htm#038;zItl=Comics Invasion!: Motion Comics"Email this/a/p

Choose The Next Marvel Action Figure

03/11/2010 06:33 PM
pimg src=http://z.about.com/d/comicbooks/1/0/7/s/normanosbornhammer.jpg border=0 alt= width=110 height=170 align=left /One of the great things about collecting comics is the other kinds of things we collect with it. I know I also have some comic book art for my collection, action figures around the house, DVD's and Blu Rays of my favorite comic book movies, and even some comic book clothing that I sport at events or my local comic shop. Action figures are a favorite of mine as they are a physical incarnation of that comic book hero or villain. When I was younger, I used action figures to tell my own stories of heroes and villains fighting each other in epic battles./p pa href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/od/comicbookpublishers/p/marvelcomics.htmMarvel Comics/a is doing a nice little poll to have the fans choose who the next Marvel action figure will be. Get Your Comics Gold

03/07/2010 07:42 PM
pWe've had two comics break the million dollar mark this past month, and it would seem a good time to look at a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/od/collectingcomics/a/investcomics.htminvesting in comics/a. Commodities are hot right now, as they are a sure thing that one can hold onto, appreciate, and watch rise in price. These collectibles are great investments in that we can own a piece of history, hold a piece of the character we love and hold dear, and watch our investment grow. pWith that being said, be careful. Don't rush out there and buy up old comics just because they might be worth something. Do your homework. Check sites like eBay, a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comics.ha.com/Heritage Auctions/a, and a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://www.comicseeker.com/Comic Seeker/a to get a good idea what they are going for now. If you want to take a risk, buy a comic that is not a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/od/glossary/g/CGC.htmCGC graded/a as they normally sell for less, then get it CGC graded. The big thing to be careful about is fad comics or comics that spike in price for one reason or another. pTake Captain America #25 for instance, this comic was selling for hundreds of dollars when it first hit. Mainstream media picked it up on a feeding frenzy was birthed. You can now get the same comic for a couple of bucks on eBay and I've seen a 9.8 graded copy go for $40. Keep in mind it costs at least $17 to get it graded, not including shipping. pThere are many ways to make your money grow, but the cool thing about comic books is the connection we have with the product. This can be a danger though, so keep a level head when seeking comics to invest in./p p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/08/get-your-comics-gold.htm"Get Your Comics Gold/a originally appeared on a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/"About.com Comic Books/a on Monday, March 8th, 2010 at 00:42:29./ppa href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/08/get-your-comics-gold.htm"Permalink/a | a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/08/get-your-comics-gold.htm#gB3"Comment/a | a href="http://comicbooks.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/08/get-your-comics-gold.htm#038;zItl=Get Your Comics Gold"Email this/a/p

Dueling Million Dollar Comic Books

03/07/2010 06:56 PM
pWell the news broke recently about another record breaking comic book, this time from a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comics.ha.com/?ic=task-comicsHeritage Auctions/a, who sold the comic for the $1,075,500 (which includes the buyers premium). Seems the Batman wins this round as Detective Comics #27 is the big winner this time. Seems we have a bit of the dueling million dollar comics! Lon Allen, Director of the Comics Department said, ...we suspected it could go as high as $800,000. The fact that it then topped seven figures, and nosed out Superman for the world record price was simply amazing to us all. I've never been in an auction room with such excitement. Would've been great to be in that room./p pIt must feel good for a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/od/comicbookpublishers/p/dccomicsprofile.htmDC Comics/a who has these two fine heroes in their main lineup. The formation of DC Entertainment, spectacular relaunch of the a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/od/batm2/fr/darkknight.htmBatman movies/a, lots of buzz about their current titles, and breaking new ground in comics with their weekly series and newspaper format Wednesday Comics. Comics Invasion! - My Dreams

03/01/2010 05:02 AM
pI had a very weird dream the other night. It was a very action packed, where I was in this old house that was besieged by these mutated monstrous beings. It wasn't exactly explained in the dream but I was also apparently affected by this mutation and had great strength, which I used to lay the smack down upon these evil beings and cleanse my home from their infestation. Then things turned weird and I was back at my parents house in southern Oregon with my wife and child and was attacked by another monstrous creature. This time it was non other than a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/od/characters/p/hulkbio.htmThe Incredible Hulk/a. Not necessarily the one from the comics, but the bona fide Lou Ferrigno decked out in green paint and back in his heyday times of being completely muscled out. I hit him in the face with a rake and he was not pleased with that. I don't remember anything after that because I was awoken by my alarm clock. pComics have a funny way of seeping into our consciousness. Some of us live, breath, and sleep comic books, and that isn't a bad thing. This passion gets us through hard times, takes us to new worlds, and allows for us to share the experience with others. Some may take it a stretch too far, but being a fan is a great thing, even when it attacks us in our sleep. Just make sure you have a rake....they hate a rake to the face./p p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/01/comics-invasion-my-dreams.htm"Comics Invasion! - My Dreams/a originally appeared on a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/"About.com Comic Books/a on Monday, March 1st, 2010 at 10:02:35./ppa href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/01/comics-invasion-my-dreams.htm"Permalink/a | a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/01/comics-invasion-my-dreams.htm#gB3"Comment/a | a href="http://comicbooks.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/03/01/comics-invasion-my-dreams.htm#038;zItl=Comics Invasion! - My Dreams"Email this/a/p

Comic Con International - On The Move?

02/27/2010 07:24 PM
pIt's been no secret that the a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/od/conventionsandevents/p/comiccon.htmComic Con International/a is out of space. Complaints of huge lines, no rooms, and crowded halls come out every year the convention happens. CCI has pushed the convention center in San Diego to build or they will be moving and since their contract runs up in 2012. The city and neighboring businesses have been making their pitch to CCI to stay, but other cities have been jumping in on what can only be described as a battle royale to secure the convention for their hometown. I've read that the neighboring hotels have offered CCI free floor space in the number of 300,000 square feet and have promised to hold more rooms in an effort to keep them in town. pIt will surely be a win for whichever city gets the convention. Guests, fans, industry people, and more flock to the area and bring in millions of dollars in revenue. Many turn it into a vacation and stay longer than the three-day event and that brings even more in. I think the real winners will be the fans that get to have a better show with more room that can hopefully avoid situations like the Twilight fans ruining Comic-Con, which happened last year. CCI has made no firm decision yet and it looks like they are waiting it out to see who bids the most in this auction style process. What's your vote? Should Comic-Con stay or go?/p p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/02/28/comic-con-international-on-the-move.htm"Comic Con International - On The Move?/a originally appeared on a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/"About.com Comic Books/a on Sunday, February 28th, 2010 at 00:24:36./ppa href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/02/28/comic-con-international-on-the-move.htm"Permalink/a | a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/02/28/comic-con-international-on-the-move.htm#gB3"Comment/a | a href="http://comicbooks.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/02/28/comic-con-international-on-the-move.htm#038;zItl=Comic Con International - On The Move?"Email this/a/p

The One Million Dollar Comic Book

02/27/2010 06:44 PM
pEver dreamed of having a million dollars? What would you do with it? How about buy one comic book, thats right, one single comic book. Well that is what a recent investor did to acquire one of the only highest known graded Action Comics #1, the first appearance of Superman. The group that brokered the deal is a href=Comicconnect.com/a a comic book consignment and auction site. They broke the record for the price of a single comic book which they also set with another copy of Action Comics #1 at $317,200. pSo why such a high price for a comic book? Well according to the Comic Connect site, this comic is, Only about 100 copies Action Comics #1 remain in existence, and of those 100, only two have received a grading of 8.0 (Very Fine) or higher. This particular book is one of them, making it among the rarest of the rare. pThere is also the fact that commodities (goods like gold, oil, and even comics) are going up in value as the stock market has fluctuated. When stock prices fall, goods often go up in price. I'm no market expert, but we've all seen the price of gas go up and my brother who is in the jewelry business says gold is at its highest its ever been. pEven if I had a million, I don't know if I'd be buying a copy of Action Comics #1. Maybe if I had many many millions, but even then I imagine it would be a hard sell for the wife. Investing in comics can be a difficult thing, especially for the comic fan. The problem for us is that we have an invested interest in the characters we are collecting. I know for me I have many Holy Grails for comics I'd love to own. Avengers #4, Captain America #100, and Captain America Comics #1 are among those for sure. If I had the money, I know I'd pay more than they are worth to acquire those comics for my collection. Thats the trouble with collectors and their collectibles. If one is not careful, a collector can get into a bit of trouble by paying too much for a comic. But I guess when it comes down to it, does it really matter? Have you ever paid more for a comic simply because you needed it for your collection or just had to have it?/p p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/02/27/the-one-million-dollar-comic-book.htm"The One Million Dollar Comic Book/a originally appeared on a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/"About.com Comic Books/a on Saturday, February 27th, 2010 at 23:44:32./ppa href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/02/27/the-one-million-dollar-comic-book.htm"Permalink/a | a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/02/27/the-one-million-dollar-comic-book.htm#gB3"Comment/a | a href="http://comicbooks.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/02/27/the-one-million-dollar-comic-book.htm#038;zItl=The One Million Dollar Comic Book"Email this/a/p

Share Your Comic Collecting Story

02/21/2010 08:09 PM
We all have a story about our comic collection. How we got started, what hooked us, who was involved, etc. The great thing about comic book collections is that no two are the same. They are almost like a fingerprint in that they are a unique piece, each with identifiers that give a window into our souls. Are they filled with dark and gritty works, trailblazing independent work, mainstream goodness, or just plain comics for kids? New DC Leadership Announced

02/19/2010 07:27 PM
pWell the announcement came in this week about the new leadership for a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/od/comicbookpublishers/p/dccomicsprofile.htmDC Comics/a, one of a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/od/glossary/g/thebigtwo.htmThe Big Two/a in the comic world. With the departure of Paul Levitz as President and Publisher back in September of 2009, there has been speculation as to whom would pick up the slack. These people would be directing the course of the newly formed DC Entertainment, commissioned to not only run DC Comics, but also to bring DC properties to more avenues and media forms, much in the way Marvel has done./p pThe results have Dan Didio and a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/od/comicbookcreators/p/jimleebio.htmJim Lee/a working as Co-Publishers, and a href=http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/od/comicbookcreators/p/geoffjohnsbio.htmGeoff Johns/a as Chief Creative Officer. Didio was a fair shoe in as even though some might disagree with his decisions, he has helped shape DC and reclaim some of the ground they lost to Marvel in recent years. Lee was surprising, but totally makes sense given his pioneering work with Image and Wildstorm, and the recent creative directorial role he took with the DC Online game. Johns is perhaps the most surprising, but with is creative work in film, television, and as the chief writer for DC Online, it makes a lot of sense./p pI think in the long run, Johns will have the most to prove and it will be interesting to see what he creatively officiates. It will also be interesting to see where DC Entertainment goes, but if this latest rash of DC movies and DVD's are an indication of where things are going, I am very much in favor of DC Entertainment spreading the DC love to as many areas as possible./p p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/02/20/new-dc-leadership-announced.htm"New DC Leadership Announced/a originally appeared on a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/"About.com Comic Books/a on Saturday, February 20th, 2010 at 00:27:47./ppa href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/02/20/new-dc-leadership-announced.htm"Permalink/a | a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc#038;zu=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/02/20/new-dc-leadership-announced.htm#gB3"Comment/a | a href="http://comicbooks.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://comicbooks.about.com/b/2010/02/20/new-dc-leadership-announced.htm#038;zItl=New DC Leadership Announced"Email this/a/p
